The West Indies Bay tree (Pimenta racemosa) is indigenous to islands in the Caribbean. Sailors sailing around the Caribbean in the 16th century discovered that by crushing the Pimenta racemosa leaves, the spicy fragrant bay oil would be released. They would rub the leaves on their bodies to mask their body odor on their long voyages. The sailors discovered that infusing the leaves in rum (which they drank daily) made extracting the bay oil easier and made it easier to apply on their bodies. The rest, as they say, is history, and the Bay Rum scent was born. Over the centuries, sailors carried the scent around the world, adding in citrus peels, spices, and other ingredients to enhance the fragrance.

In the mid 1800's, Bay Rum became a very popular aftershave splash which could be found in barber shops throughout the Caribbean and across America. On Caribbean islands like Puerto Rico and Dominica, Bay Rum is also used locally to rub on the body to relieve fever, muscle aches, insect bites and more.
